Teaching Artists
Develop and grow others as musicians and people!
Teaching Artists are the heart and soul of the Play On Philly community! Teaching Artists work daily with pre-K through 12th grade students to cultivate their instrumental skills, as well as encourage social and emotional growth. Teaching Artists are part-time salaried employees who teach group lessons and conduct ensembles.
Teaching Artists receive intensive professional development each year to ensure they are well equipped to foster safe classroom community where students feel they belong and encouraged to take risks.

- College graduates, graduate students, or professional musicians who have a professional background
- Committed and “bought in” to POP’s mission, vision and ways of working
- Relatable to students and families
- Team-oriented and excited to work in collaboration with others and expand their contributions to Play On Philly
- Proactive and able to solve problems independently
- Humble about their knowledge gaps and eager for feedback to grow
- Excellent at their instrument
- Teaching experience
- Possesses interpersonal skills, impeccable attention to detail, curiosity for learning new things and a willingness to “pitch in” wherever needed
Possible Professional Development Opportunities:
- Formal observations and feedback at least twice a year by the Educational Leadership team
- Sessions led by experts in the field.
- Sample of previous PD topics: Culturally Responsive Pedagogy; Trauma Informed Approach to Music Education; Citizenship and Classroom Management
Employment Term:
- Generally, September – December, with the potential for a second agreement for the January – June Session.
- Summer work possible as well
- Hours dependent on the Music Center schedule
