Joseph Conyers, the Assistant Principal Bassist of The Philadelphia Orchestra treated the bass studio at Play On, Philly! (POP) to an inspiring Master Class. With many of the 120 POP Summer Session students looking on, Mr. Conyers taught the students about sound production, proper positioning and musical styles. He also listened to the pieces they are studying and gave instruction. Play On, Philly! provides distinctive music education and life skills training that enables students to discover their capacity for progressive growth, personal achievement, and value to the community. During the school year, almost 250 young musicians in grades 1 – 8 attend the program, which meets every day afterschool for several hours at both St. Francis de Sales School in West Philadelphia and Freire Charter Middle School in Center City. The Summer Session is held daily during July at West Philadelphia Catholic High School. POP is a tuition-free program.
